Sleep is not one continuous state
After you fall asleep, the brain and body do not remain in one mode all night. Sleep is broadly divided into non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM) and rapid eye movement sleep (REM), cycling through them several times.
NREM moves from lighter stages toward deep sleep. Deep sleep is generally concentrated earlier in the night and is associated with physical restoration and aspects of memory processing. REM, often associated with vivid dreaming, generally becomes more prominent later and contributes to learning, memory, and emotional processing.
Waking briefly does not automatically mean sleep failed
Short awakenings around stage transitions are common and often forgotten by morning. The more useful questions are whether awakenings are frequent, whether returning to sleep takes a long time, and whether daytime function is affected.
What wearables can tell you
Consumer watches and rings usually estimate stages from movement, heart rate, and related signals. Sleep laboratories use brain waves, eye movement, and muscle signals. Wearables can help reveal longer-term patterns, but a single score is not a diagnosis.
A more useful way to observe sleep
- Record bedtime, wake time, and approximate awake periods.
- Include daytime energy, caffeine, exercise, and naps.
- Look at two-to-four-week trends rather than nightly scores.
- If tracking creates more anxiety, taking a break from data may help.
